The reason why lead is used in a lot of products is to provide more durability, provide resistance to elemental factors like moisture which causes corrosion, and making the product’s paint or liquid state dry quickly.  The downside of using lead on products, however, is that it could cause stunted growth, loss of hearing, delayed development, and kidney failure; and children are more vulnerable to these risks.  Asbestos is used in crayons in order to hold and bind them together and retain the shape.   Asbestos poses a more serious health hazard than lead because of its powdery consistency and be able to be airborne and inhaled.

Thanks to advance food research, a much safer crayon has been discovered and being manufactured derived from soy beans.  Crayons made of soy beans are no doubt safer than any other crayons made from traditional raw materials that are also edible.  But do not go tell your kids that they can eat their crayons, that’s a no-no.  If I were to have to buy a crayon for my kid, as a concerned parent, I would certainly buy him a soy based crayon if it’s available.
